P. retrouve dans cette énumération les vingt-cinq tattva du Sāṃkhya:
/pāL/, le néant (ou le zéro) c'est le puruṣa inactif; /kāl/, le quart,
mais aussi "le germe", ce sont les cinq éléments qui débutent
par l'éther (i.e. les mahā bhūta); /pāku/ "division" (ou moitié)
ce sont les cinq karmendriy; /un/ c'est le son, qualité de l'éther;
/deux/, le toucher, qualité du vent; /trois/, la forme, qualite du feu;
/quatre/, la saveur, qualité de l'eau; /cinq/, l'odeur, qualité de la terre;
/six/, ce sont les cinq sens d'aperception (buddhīndriy) et le manas,
sens mental qui en détermine la perception; /sept/, l'ahaṃkāra;
/huit/, la buddhi; /neuf/, la mūlaprakṛti. L'exposé est complet et parfaite-
ment correct; le seul problème demeure de savoir si P. n'a pas ici
transposé un peu abusivement la science du Sāṃkhya qu'il avait
étalée par ailleurs aussi brillamment dans le commentaire du /KuRaḷ/ 23.
