The session “Negotiating Discipline: Askesis, Poetry, and Desire in Sri
Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore," organized by FLAME University's India
Centre, explores how ideas of discipline and asceticism (askesis) are
shaped and expressed in twentieth-century literary thought. Drawing on the
works of Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore, the talk
examines askesis as both a theme and an aesthetic framework, highlighting
how literary form engages with questions of renunciation, politics, and
creative expression in a global modernist context.

By situating asceticism within broader cultural and intellectual
frameworks, the session offers insights into the intersections of
literature, philosophy, and the theo-politics of form in the twentieth
century.
