Dear colleagues,

the academy project “Buddhist Manuscripts from Gandhāra”, hosted
by the Institute for Indology and Tibetology at LMU Munich, is
inviting applications for a 3-year Ph.D. scholarship (with the
possibility of extending it for a fourth year). The Gandhāra
project team would be grateful if you could attract the attention
of this call to suitable candidates. The Ph.D. student will be
required to take an active role in the project’s next phase
(running from 2026 to 2032): during that phase, work will not
primarily be focused on the edition of Gāndhārī manuscripts, but
the project team will investigate more broadly the religious and
literary history of Gandhāran Buddhism. As a result, applicants
from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and linguistic skills may be
considered.

The scholarship, set at 75% of an E13 position, is quite generous
for a doctoral position in the German landscape. The deadline for
application is 20 June, and the contract will start on 1 October,
with some flexibility on the latter date.

For further details, please see the attachments or refer to the
LMU job-portal links, in either English or German.

We would be grateful if you could circulate this call to potential
applicants, and stand ready to answer further questions.

With kind regards,
