Title: The Evolution of Vāsanā: Tracing Its Multifaceted Meanings

Abstract:

The development of the Buddhist concept of vāsanā was not linear or originated from a single source but rather a fusion of multiple ideas from various sources. Through a genealogical approach, the major ideas expressed by vāsanā can be found in four key aspects: (1) karmic imprint, (2) impregnation of conditioned dharmas, (3) traces of defilements, and (4) impressions from hearing. As vāsanā became a doctrinally significant technical term in Buddhism, a new doctrinal system was formed to integrate its various meanings. Consequently, later Buddhists came to regard vāsanā as a self-consistent concept across different contexts.

About the speaker:

Gao Mingyuan (PhD, Kelaniya 2019) specializes in Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma and Yogācāra philosophy. He obtained his Ph.D. under the supervision of Ven. Prof. KL Dhammajoti and has taught at the University of Hong Kong. Currently, he is a Research Fellow at Waseda University, where his research is supported by the BDK Foundation. Gao’s research articles have appeared in such major English academic journals as the Journal of Indian Philosophy, Journal of Buddhist Philosophy, and Religions of South Asia. His upcoming monograph, The Buddhist Concept of Vāsanā: A Genealogical Study, is set to be published in the Wiener Studien zur Tibetologie und Buddhismuskunde series.

The lecture is open to the public and free of charge. No preregistration required. Everybody is welcome.
