[INDOLOGY] Seeking recommendations on “Kala Pani”

Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

I hope this email finds you well. I am currently researching the concept of
Kala Pani (black water) as both a Hindu taboo and a cultural/religious
practice, particularly in its historical and contemporary relationship to
Southeast Asia. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for relevant
scholarship on this topic.

I am familiar with Anand Yang’s Empire of Convicts: Indian Penal Labor in
Colonial Southeast Asia but would be grateful for any additional sources
you might suggest.
