[INDOLOGY] Velthuis nagari font for linux

Adriano, I had to deal with this same problem recently, and I learned that XeLaTeX does not use (and apparently cannot be made to use dev.sty, which is the Velthuis macro package.   So all commands that are Velthuis-specific and defined in dev.sty or required for devnag.exe (e.g., @hyphen and \dn) are no longer needed or wanted.

The good news is that XeLaTeX with Polyglossia can read the Velthuis transliteration fine, but until your query today, I was not aware of any TTF font that mimicked the Velthuis metafont closely.  Sanskrit2003 came most highly recommended, but I still missed the Velthuis look.  I would say that Arial Unicode MS is pretty satisfactory as a near-match:

I did also FreeFontSerif, which in its Devanagari range is modeled on Velthuis.  It looks pretty close.  It is available for free download here:

I installed all the fonts in what seemed like the latest folder:

I haven’t yet tried them out on in XeLaTeX, but in Word it failed to execute a basic conjunct like g+r :

I'm aware of that.

The problem is that this one is a font for Latex, part of a specific package and I don't know how to use it, for example, in common text editors like libreoffice, word, etc.

Fonts are not specific to operating systems.  I have moved from MacOS to Linux to BSD over the course of the past 15 years, and I have never had a font that worked on one not work on another operating system.
