By chance I came across a further interesting text passage:

taṃ tvām ayaśasā spṛṣṭaṃ na brūyāṃ yadi saṃjaya
kharīvātsalyam āhus tan niḥsāmarthyam ahetukam (5.133.6 Mahābhārata crit. ed.)

The dictionaries give the following meaning of kharīvātsalya with
reference to exactly this passage:

pw s.v. kharīvātsalya "m. die Mutterliebe einer Mauleselin (die nie
Junge hat), so v.a. eine übelangebrachte M[utterliebe], eine
M[utterliebe] für Nichts und wieder Nichts" ["Mauleselin" = female
hinny"!]

MW s.v. kharī—vātsalya "n. ‘maternal love of a she-mule’, motherliness
not wanted"

Apte s.v. kharī—vātsalyam: "motherliness not wanted".

Kind regards,
Roland Steiner
