Neumann, Die Reden Gotama Buddhos (Majjhimanikāya), vol II, p. 705 (n. 
228) reads
vekurañjāya = vekuranvāya=vaikriyānvayāya and translates:
Because of crossing (vekurañjāya) it is a mule.
