Mayrhofer (in KEWA) regards kośa as the original form of the word:

kóśaḥ m. Faß, Kufe, Behälter, Schatzkammer / cask, coop, cupboard, treasury (usw.), vgl. kukṣíḥ, kuśayáḥ, kusumbhaḥ, kusūlaḥ und aw. kusra- ,,sich wölbend"...
kóṣaḥ m. Behälter, Schatzkammer / cupboard, treasury (usw.), literarisch später als kóśaḥ und wohl aus diesem hervorgegangen; Gleichsetzung mit an. hauss ,,Hirnschale" usw. (idg. -s-) ist weniger wahrscheinlich.
