Under the Yamuna
There is a river,
Serene and yet swift,
Greatly avid and esoteric,
Its waters trimeric!
Purity like the fire,
Winging higher and higher!
A gifts-of-love giver!
On its hither shore a gift —
Gokulam, Gokulam!
अधस्ताद् यमुनानद्या अस्ति काचित् सरिद्वरा ।
शान्तापि रभसा यान्ती गूढभावा महोज्ज्वला ।।
त्रिगुणं जलमेतस्या महातेजो यथानल: ।
ऊर्ध्वमूर्ध्वं समुद्याति प्रेमोपायनदायकम् ।।
गोकुलं गोकुलं तस्या परतीर उपायनम् ।
Under the Yamuna
There is a river
A delight’s giver!
Under the Yamuna
Adorer and Adored
A flame into flame poured!
अधस्ताद् यमुनानद्या अस्ति काचित् सरिद्वरा ।
प्राणयन्ती जगत् कृत्स्नं सदानन्दप्रदायिनी ।।
अधस्ताद् यमुनानद्या लालयन्ती च लालिता ।
काचिद् दीपशिखा दीपं प्राणयन्ती समुत्थिता ।।
As it speeds, it speeds,
Joy to joys leads,
Speeds more and more;
On its hither shore
In Gokulam’s grove!
In promptness of love!
यथा दीपशिखाज्योती रभसा वर्धतेतराम् ।
तथानन्दोर्मयो यान्ति सदानन्दमहार्णवम्।।
अस्या नद्या: परे तीरे गोकुलस्य गृहाङ्गणे ।
समुत्सुक: प्रेमरूप: कश्चित्तत्र प्रतीक्षते ।।
Scented orange flowers
In globe-shaped hours
On the hither bank
Perfectest in rank
In this Gokulam,
With scented globes of Kadambam!
नारिङ्गपुष्पगन्धाढ्ये सर्वकालसमुज्ज्वले ।
गोकुलं तत् परे तीरे कदम्बामोदनन्दितम् ।।
Love in the heart sinks!
Like a bee that honey drinks!
Gokulam! Gokulam!
गोकुळम्! गोकुळम्!
हृदये गुरुता प्रेम्णो मधुमत्तद्विरेफवत् ।
गोकुलं गोकुलं सर्वं गोकुलं गोकुलं सदा ।।
Scented globes of Kadambam!
Orange spheres of Kadambam!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्
Gokulam! गोकुळम्
कदम्बसुमगन्धोऽत्र कदम्बा: पुष्पिता: सदा ।
गोकुलं गोकुलं सर्वं गोकुलं गोकुलं सदा ।।
And the reed plays
Like raptures and rays;
Mountains climb
Whispering winds plead
And the brooks speed, —
Timelessness entering into time!
>From silence music comes;
Occult of the quiet hums:
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
क्वणन्ति तन्तवस्तत्र रश्मय: स्वरमण्डलम् ।
उच्चै: प्रयान्ति गिरय: किञ्चित् कूजन्ति वायव: ।।
स्रोतांसि रभसा यान्ति कालोऽकाले प्रतिष्ठित: ।
मौनादायाति सङ्गीतं जपं गुञ्जति सन्ततम् ।।
गोकुलं गोकुलं गोकुलं गोकुलम् ।
Under this Yamuna
There is a river!
Oh that river
Under the Yamuna!
In the buzz of time,
In the hurry of highways,
In the quickness of rhyme!
And this river
Under the Yamuna
Rushes into Yamuna
A loveliest music plays
In festival of Kadambam!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
अधस्ताद् यमुनानद्या अस्ति काचित् सरिद्वरा ।
अहो सा सरिता रम्या निगूढा यमुनातले ।।
आक्रन्दे कालचक्रस्य महामार्गगतावपि ।
लोकस्य क्रमणे चैव साविज्ञातापि गूहते।।
अधस्ताद्यमुनाया: सा प्रवहन्ती सरिद्वरा ।
उद्भिद्य सहसा बन्धान् यमुनायां विलीयते ।।
अहो महानुत्सवोऽयं मधुगीतं प्रसर्पति ।
गोकुलं गोकुलमिदं कदम्बकुलमङ्गलम् ।।

Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
Gokulam! गोकुळम्!
