Correction to my keyboard layout. It should have read:

 ctrl+a = ā

ctrl+i = ī

ctrl+u = ū

alt+r = ṛ

alt+ctrl+r = ṝ

alt+l = ḷ

alt+ctrl+l = ḹ

ctrl+n = ṅ

ctrl+~ = ñ

alt+n = ṇ

ctrl+m = ṁ

alt+m = ṃ

ctrl+s = ś

alt+s = ṣ
