Dear colleagues,

Everyone interested in the Udānavarga should consult the  
“Sanskrit-Wörterbuch der buddhistischen Texte aus den Turfan-Funden  
und der kanonischen Literatur der Sarvāstivāda-Schule” (Sanskrit  
Dictionary of the Buddhist Texts from the Turfan Finds and of the  
Canonical Literature of the Sarvāstivāda School), Göttingen 1994-2018.  
Countless manuscripts fragments that were unknown to older text  
editions have been taken into account for this dictionary. Thus, the  
relevant articles of a text or a passage, taken together, sometimes  
virtually amount to a new edition, which is especially true for the  
Udānavarga, the Mahāprinirvāṇasūtra, and, to a lesser extent, the  
Catuṣpariṣatsūtra.

For stanza Uv 1.14 one finds in the Additions and Corrections s.v.  
pada a nearly complete reconstruction, together with a quotation of a  
similar passage from the Aṅguttaranikāya:

Uv 1.14 (dazu Or.15014/718 Rb; vgl. SHT (VIII) 1993 V2) yathāpi  
va(dhy)/// ... ///(ya)d y(a)d uddharate p(a)da(m*) antikāghatano  
bhavati (evaṃ) martyasya jīvitam (vgl. AN IV 138.4ff. seyyathā pi  
brāhmaṇa gāvī vajjhā āghātanaṃ niyyamānā yañ ñad eva pādaṃ [v.l.  
padaṃ] uddharati santike 'va hoti vadhassa santike 'va maraṇassa, evam  
eva kho brāhmaṇa govajjhūpamaṃ jīvitaṃ manussānaṃ ...).

Also, the German translation of the complete Udānavarga by Michael  
Hahn (contained in: “Vom rechten Leben -- Buddhistische Lehren aus  
Indien und Tibet,” Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig, 2007) should be  
consulted.
