For your information: a very interesting article on Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh's
astronomical observatories, written by Peter Engel, appeared in NATURAL HISTORY
(vol.106, number 6, June 1993, pages 48-56), under the title "Stairways to
Heaven", with the sub-head "A maharajah's stone observatories built in the 1720s
served the religious and secular needs of India's Hindu and Muslim rulers". Your
local librarian should be able to help you acquire the article, one way or
another.
