Just to confirm: My copy of The Roots of Ayurveda with Dhanvantari on the cover does not specify 3rd edition on the copyright page. It only says:

First published by Penguin Books India 1998
This revised edition published 2003

Copyright Dominik Wujastyk, 1998, 2003

However, at the end of the Acknowledgements there is a new page, page xi, with the heading "THIRD EDITION," followed by a brief paragraph by Dominik about this edition.

Hi Dominik:

I could not find this edition — at least could not identify it as the 3rd ed, even on Penguin/Random House website.

Dear friends,

In 1998, I published The Roots of Ayurveda with Penguin India.  They did a great job and I was happy to be published by them, at the time.  In 2001 they produced a second updated edition that included some corrections.

In protest at Bertelsmann's and Penguin India's craven submission to a right-wing challenge to my friend Wendy Doniger's book The Hindus: An Alternative History and their subsequent withdrawal of her book from the Indian market, I withdrew my book from the Penguin India and the Indian market.

The 3rd, 2003 edition of Roots (Penguin, London & New York, ISBN 0-140-44824-1) was a major editorial update, completely re-typeset, and with a new index.  If you use the book, please always read and cite the 3rd edition.  Not just because of the politics, but because it's a significantly better edition.

Sincerely,
Dominik Wujastyk
