Thank you to the individuals who answered me off-list.
For those interested in the intricacies of Indian holidays.  I spoke to an attendant at the temple who told me that because this year two tithis fell on Vijayadasami, Because of this, Vijayadasami would fall on Oct. 2nd.so the priests had decided to celebrate the first night of Navaratri on Sept. 23 instead of Sept. 22 so the holiday would be the usual 10 days instead of 11.

Secondly, an Ayappa Subramanyan temple I sometimes visit in Quebec starts its Navaratri  celebration tonight Sept. 23.   Any explanation why its starting on Sept. 23 instead of Sept. 22?  Is there any variation by tradition? Even if it was following the Panchang date for India, my understanding is the panchang date is Sept. 22 for both North America and India.
