Marathi was also awarded the status of a classical (abhijāta) language by the Modi government.

Dear Herman,

Unfortunately I could find no more information than what was posted on the PM's website:

https://www.pmindia.gov.in/en/news_updates/cabinet-approves-conferring-status-of-classical-language-to-marathi-pali-prakrit-assamese-and-bengali-languages/

This only says: "In the meantime, proposal from Bihar, Assam, West Bengal was also received for conferring status of Classical Language to Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali."

I do not think we will ever see the proposal(s). But I would be very surprised if international actors were involved in any capacity other than providing support or evidence for the proposals (which, this announcement leads me to believe, need to be submitted by a state government).

Dear List members,
In a mail I have received today from the Prākrit Times International students of Prākrit are informed that the Indian government has accorded that language the status of "classical language". I just wonder if this is indeed an act of the Indian government only. If I remember well, at the time in the case of Tamil thanks to the efforts of G.L. Hart the Unesco had been involved as well. Do we have to do with two parallel developments, one national, the other international?
