announce SummerSALT, a weeklong residential summer school for emerging translators from South Asian languages. The school will be held August 5-9, 2024, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.
Click here to apply. Applications close March 15. Applicants are asked to describe their literary translation and other relevant experience, to provide a CV and personal statement, and include a sample translation limited to 400 words. Details on the application form.
Prospective students will apply to one of the following five workshops offered:
- Bangla, led by Arunava Sinha
- Hindi-Urdu, led by Daisy Rockwell (open to translators of Hindi or Urdu)
- Tamil, led by TBA
- Multilingual poetry, led by Ranjit Hoskote
- Multilingual prose, led by Tejaswini Niranjana
Students in the Bangla, Hindi-Urdu, and Tamil groups will work on translating a text by a writer who will participate in the workshop. The multilingual prose and poetry groups are open to those working from any South Asian language(s), with each participant supplying a short text for discussion. A number of slots in the multi-language groups will be ringfenced for translators from Sinhala.
The registration fee for successful SummerSALT applicants is USD $800, which includes accommodation and meals as well as programming.
To remove barriers to access, SALT will offer financial aid and bursary support that includes a number of reduced-fee registrations, and some travel bursaries.
