Professor Leonid B. Alaev passed away yesterday on Mon. Jul. 31, 2023. He was 90.

He was the leading Russian Indologist, specialist on mediaeval Indian history. His keen interest was Indian village community. He was the successive critic of Marx theory. He was the author of dozens of monographs and articles on theoretical and applied aspects of Indian history from ancient till modern times. He was one of the authors of ‘The Cambridge Economic History of India. Vol. 1: c. 1200 – c. 1750. Eds. Tapan Raychaudhury and Irfan Habib’.

He was my teacher and friend.
