Dear Colleagues,
Jens-Uwe Hartmann, who is not on this list, has asked me to pass on the announcement of the death of Prof. Adelheid Mette (12 December 1934 – 3 March 2023).
Born in Belgard on the Persante in the then province of Pomerania, Adelheid Mette studied Classical Philology in Hamburg where she prepared a PhD on the Aiolian meters in the dramas of Euripides (1959). She then switched to Indology and wrote a habilitation thesis on an ancient Jain work concerned with the almsround of the monks (1972). From 1972 to 1988 she was first Hochschulassistent (Assistant Professor), then Professor (1980) at the University of Munich. In 1988 she accepted the call to the chair of Indology at the University of Münster, which she held until her retirement in 2000. After her retirement, she remained associated with the Indology Institute in Munich, teaching on a variety of subjects until a few years ago. She died in a nursing home in Ottobrunn near Munich where she had lived for the last two years.
With kind regards,
Vincent Tournier
