Thank you Andrea (and Charles Li off list) for suggesting Balinese. This may likely be the case as the manuscript was gifted from Bali. Other suggestions have been Burmese but I imagine the Bali connection is quite telling.

It is certainly real, but I am not an expert in Southern scripts and figure someone here can give me the answer fairly immediately. It is said to be the Ramāyana.
