Dear Patrick, Tim, and Indology colleagues—

With apologies for belatedly reviving this thread, I wanted to respond to Patrick’s query by mentioning several articles of mine on this theme of Vedic revivalism:

2016 “Survivals & Revivals: the Transmission of Jaiminīya Sāmaveda in Modern South India.” In The Vedic Śākhās: Past, Present, Future, Harvard Oriental Series Opera Minora 9, edited by Jan Houben, Julieta Rotaru, and Michael Witzel, 443-74. Cambridge, MA: Dept. of South Asian Studies, Harvard University.

2017 “The Amplified Sacrifice: Sound, Technology, and Participation in Modern Vedic Ritual.” Journal of South Asian History and Culture 8.4: 560-578. DOI:10.1080/19472498.2017.1371505

“Vedic Oral Tradition.” Oxford Bibliographies Online: Hinduism. Ed. Tracey Coleman. New York: Oxford University Press. DOI:10.1093/OBO/9780195399318-0184

2018 “Digital Guru: Embodiment, Technology, and the Transmission of Traditional Knowledge in Kerala.” Asian Ethnology 77.1-2: 3-31.

The Oxford bibliography cited above includes annotations of work by other scholars that may be relevant—including several mentioned by Tim a few weeks back. I’d also highly recommend the following piece, which takes a look at Vedic revivals in Kerala in the decades following Staal’s seminal research:

Mahadevan, T. P., and Frits Staal. “The Turning Point in a Living Tradition: Somayāgam 2003.” In Indische Kultur im Kontext: Rituale, Texte und Ideen aus Indien und der Welt; Festschrift für Klaus Mylius. Edited by Lars Göhler, 365–389. Beiträge zur Indologie 40. Wiesbaden, Germany: Harrassowitz Verlag, 2005.

Yours,
Finnian

Hello Patrick,

The most recent contribution is the excellent volume by Borayin Larios (which began as his dissertation). I will have up-to-date bibliography:

Michael Witzel has written on this, most recently (though based on a 1986 original version in German):
Witzel, Michael. 'Agnihotra Rituals in Nepal', in Richard K. Payne, and Michael Witzel (eds), Homa Variations: The Study of Ritual Change across the Longue Durée
, Oxford Ritual Studies Series (New York: OUP, 2016), 371–406. https://doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199351572.003.0014.

I wrote a couple of pieces on this topic two decades ago.  The bibliography of those will include other relevant publications to that point, especially by Fred Smith:

(I also shot video (alas, still only raw footage) of an agnihotra performed in Warje Malwadi, Pune in 2002 or so.)

From around the same era:
Cezary Galewicz. 2003. “A Keen Eye on details. Reviving ritual perfection in Trichur Somayaga.” Bulletin d'études indiennes 21 (1): 239-253.

And of course Staal, Agni.

Subject: [INDOLOGY] vedic revival

Dear Friends,

I'm compiling a bibliography and would appreciate any suggestions on books, chapters, sections, films, YouTube clips, and any other related media.

The topic is "Vedic Revival / Vedic Revivalism".

I have compiled references that mostly cover the contemporary manifestations of this phenomenon, though I am sure there might be things I've missed.

If there are any recommendations on particular references to earlier, historical periods, then I would be delighted to know what these might be.

If there certain thematic groupings one might apply, please let me know.

These references could be in any language, not being restricted to English.

Thank you in advance.

All the best,
