This is what I wanted to say: the mentions about the previous editions in the Indian books are sometimes not accurate. The "Ancient Indian Tradition and Mythology Series " with Motilal started precisely with these first 4 volumes at the end of the 1960s, not before. It can be checked through the best university libraries: the dates of 1969-70 for the first edition is the right one

Further, no mention of the 1969-1970 edition (first?) is mentioned. Could be perhaps a print error of 2000-2002 reprint?

Shastri's "edition" is... the AITM English translation first issued with Motilal in 1969-70 (several reprints; I am surprised by the 1950 date, which appears wrong) and, according to L. Rocher (here attached), "based on the ed. by the Panditapustakalaya, which follows, with emendations, the Venk. ed. of 1906".
