Thanks, Tim,

I'll need some time to process all that, since I'm but a beginner in xelatex, who have also forgotten all latex I learned more than 10 years ago.

Adriano, I had to deal with this same problem recently, and I learned that XeLaTeX does not use (and apparently cannot be made to use dev.sty, which is the Velthuis macro package.   So all commands that are Velthuis-specific and defined in dev.sty or required for devnag.exe (e.g., @hyphen and \dn) are no longer needed or wanted.

The good news is that XeLaTeX with Polyglossia can read the Velthuis transliteration fine, but until your query today, I was not aware of any TTF font that mimicked the Velthuis metafont closely.  Sanskrit2003 came most highly recommended, but I still missed the Velthuis look.  I would say that Arial Unicode MS is pretty satisfactory as a near-match:

                Velthuis metafont:

                Arial Unicode MS ttf:

I did also FreeFontSerif, which in its Devanagari range is modeled on Velthuis.  It looks pretty close.  It is available for free download here:

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freefont/

I installed all the fonts in what seemed like the latest folder:

[ ]

freefont-ttf-20120503.zip

2012-05-03 09:42

5.8M

I haven’t yet tried them out on in XeLaTeX, but in Word it failed to execute a basic conjunct like g+r :

I found adapting files written for use with the Velthuis package to Unicode in XeLaTeX a bit tricky, but if you contact me off-list I can provide details.

Best,
Tim

That was exactly my doubt, Tim, but my lack of technical knowledge blurred my words.

Can it be used in xelatex with polyglossia?

Dear Adriano,

As far as I understand, your problem is that the Velthuis “font” does not exist as a ttf or otf font, which would indeed be usable across platforms like other such fonts, but rather it is a metafont native to the TeX environment, and can only be used in TeX.

Best,
Tim

Thank you, Michael,

I'm aware of that.

The problem is that this one is a font for Latex, part of a specific package and I don't know how to use it, for example, in common text editors like libreoffice, word, etc.

Dear Adriano,

Fonts are not specific to operating systems.  I have moved from MacOS to Linux to BSD over the course of the past 15 years, and I have never had a font that worked on one not work on another operating system.

I hope that helps,
