Dear Madhav,

That was my misprint, not the book’s. It does indeed read कलावाद्यन्तयोः स्थितिः

Dear Dan,

The reading कलाद्यन्तयोः स्थितिः is most likely a misprint for कलावाद्यन्तयोः स्थितिः, which looks like a pāda of an Anuṣṭubh verse.  I have never seen a complete verse.  However, this quote is one of the several texts cited to argue that there are no real Kṣatriyas (and Vaiśyas) in the Kali age.  The other famous quotes used in this debate are Purāṇic lines नन्दान्तं क्षत्रियकुलम् and इत: प्रभृति शूद्रा भूपाला भविष्यन्ति, along with the story of Paraśurāma exterminating the Kṣatriyas 21 times.

Dear all,

The version commented on in the source cited by Michael Allen is कलाद्यन्तयोः स्थितिः .

Thanks for the correction, Madhav. I was wondering about the “aunty varna”—a completely new concept …

Dear Paturiji,

This quote in some medieval Dharmaśāstra works is interpreted to mean that in the Kali Yuga, only the ādya varṇa [= Brahmins] and the antya varṇa [= śūdras] survive, and that there are no true Kṣatriyas and Vaiśyas.  This quote was the basis for rejecting the Kṣatriyahood of some kings during the medieval times.

A colleague who is no on this list asked whether anyone can trace this expression: kalāv ādyantayos sthitiḥ. Any clues? Thanks.
