  Although it might look strange to argue with Harry, whose book Schrift im alten Indien: Ein Forschungsbericht mit Anmerkungen is one of my reference books, let me add my five cents. Indeed it is because of the type, which I call the Ungern type (=German) and not specific to Lanman (as you know Lanman was printed in Berlin). I have studied the history of Devanagari in Europe since 2004 and I can state it's one of the two major types used widely in the past and lost now. I have several publications in Russian and one note in English (see http://samskrtam.ru/gasuns-nagari-europe/) on the topic. I'w writing a book on Devanagari. I have scans, photos, bibliographical materials about when it was first used and where, the list is huge, the article - not published.   I proposed a paper on the replicas of these fonts (Ungern and Schlegel) I've made to the 13th World Sanskrit Conference held at the University of Edinburgh, but it was declined, so I made a speech about dhatupathas, which became the basis of my Ph.D. I plan to print a book with this Lanman's type in the next two months, a Sanskrit reader in Russian. It's an OTF font nowadays and has been updated several times since 2005. If needed, I can lend it. A few months ago I've reprinted for the 2nd time another book of Knauer (see http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/31935553/), that uses the same Ungern brother type (see http://samskrtam.ru/knauer-sanskrit/). It can be ordered still from Moscow. So "he had the type of r over v but not the type r over the long a" seems wrong, because in the same Jataka-mala volume on the same page and line we see, that the r over long a can be set in different combinations.
