Dear Suzanne,

I am shocked and very much saddened to learn from this message about the
passing away of my dear Dutch colleague Dr Maarten Bode, specialist in
Ayurveda and since the beginning co-editor of eJIM, the electronic Journal
of Indian Medicine founded by Gerrit Jan Meulenbeld and Roelf Barkhuis.

Condolences to you and other family-members, friends and colleagues of
Maarten.

I now see that his passing away is already mentioned in the recently
updated page devoted to him on the Dutch South Asia Studies website, which
also provides further details about his scientific career and publications:
https://www.dutchstudies-satsea.nl/deelnemers/maarten-bode/
His interest was especially in the social-cultural and even commercial
aspects of Indian medicine, Āyurveda, including what can be called,
perhaps, neo-Āyurveda.
The last time we met and were together was at an International Ayurveda
conference in Leiden
<https://internationalayurvedacongress.com/leiden-2018/>, Netherlands, in
2018, co-sponsored by the Indian embassy in the Netherlands and the Indian
Ministry of Ayush (a conference also "Exploring a 340-Year Relationship
between Netherlands and India" and celebrating the "epic 17th century Dutch
treatise on medicinal plants of the Western Ghats of South India called
Hortus Malabaricus"). Later on, we, Maarten and other board members, still
exchanged several messages on articles for publication in eJIM (most
recent article by Kenneth Zysk and Tsutomu Yamashita,
https://indianmedicine.nl/article/view/42519).
I look forward to reading what is mentioned as his most recent
publication: “Revitalizing Ayurveda: looking for productive
entanglements.” *Asian
medicine* (Leiden, Netherlands), 2025-02, p.1-31
