A brief note for Allen’s American friend and the members of Indology
regarding Madhav Deshpande's generous donation of books to the University of
Malaga in Spain.

Throughout 2025, the University of Malaga has had the honour of receiving
three libraries from renowned Indologists: Michel Angot, Johannes Bronkhorst
and, now Madhav Deshpande, comprising a total of between nine and ten
thousand books.

Some of these books are already in place, and all will be housed in a
modern, well-equipped library (in the Facultad de Estudios Sociales y del
Trabajo) in a large room dedicated to Asia, based on the library collections
of a degree in East Asian Studies-Korea, which aims to expand into other
areas of Asian studies.

Indology has been essential to all of this, from Elizabeth de Michelis'
initial notice on behalf of Angot's widow and disciples about the
availability (and urgency) of Michel Angot's library in December 2024 to the
present.

I believe that the members of this forum – and Allen`s American friend – can
understand very well what scholars' libraries mean as living monuments that
must endure and not be turned into pulp. And the excitement that has been
generated in the process by aspects such as our being able to send Johannes,
on 12 May 2025, a photo of his books that have just arrived at the library
and of the bright spaces where they will soon be displayed so that they can
be enjoyed by everyone now and in the future.

A great new year to everyone, and thank you once again to the donors.
