Dearcolleagues,
I amhappy to share the joy of the publication of my edited book titled 'The SocialRealms of Religion: New Researches on Religion and Society in Indian History'. Thisbook has been published by Manohar Publishers and Distributors, Delhi.
Aboutthe book:
Inthe academic study of Indian religions, a common approach has been to perceivethem as abstruse philosophies devoid of social linkages. This may not be avalid approach as many Indian religions, amidst a complex myriad of functions, also functioned as essential elements of the organisation of the socio-economicorder of the society in which they functioned and established complex linkageswith social institutions and processes. That also entailed the evolution ofcomplex patterns of interactions between different religions. This bookexplores some aspects of these complexities. Research articles in the presentbook explore three themes: patterns of interactions between different ancientand early medieval Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Ājīvika -dharma) andtheir relationships with socio-economic institutions and processes from c. 6thcentury BCE to early 13th century CE; perceptions of Islam and Muslims in Indicsources and the process of religious identity formation in medieval northIndia; and, finally, the Nātha sampradāya in its interactions with socialinstitutions and processes in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Maharashtra from thecolonial to the contemporary periods.
