Dear Colleagues, We are happy to invite you to the next lecture in our ?Emerging Scholars in Jain Studies? virtual series co-organized by the Departments of Religious Studies at UC Davis and UC Riverside. The lecture will be delivered by *Dr. Anil Mundra *on *Friday,* *October 4, 2024, 9:00-10:20am PDT*. You will find more information about the lecture and the speaker below. Register for the event here: https://ucr.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEof-qgqjwvE9IW60lrDZz1-BU_6rEQkf_V Please note that you will need to sign into your Zoom account before entering the Zoom room. Best wishes, Ana Bajzelj and Lynna Dhanani *Identity and Identities, Jain and Otherwise* What does "identity" mean? The term may seem to be as equivocal as it is over-burdened in contemporary philosophy and politics. On the one hand, there is the bedrock singularity that makes anything something at all; and on the other, a person is said to have various identities in affiliation with various social groups. Putting modern theorists of identity in conversation with the eighth-century ?vet?mbara philosopher Haribhadras?ri and his characteristically Jain doctrine of non-one-sidedness ( *anek?ntav?da*), this lecture will show how these apparently disparate meanings of ?identity? can be seen to hang together in Jain thought and praxis. To identify oneself with the Jain ideology of liberation ? to have a certain sort of Jain social identity ? involves identifying oneself in terms of a particular non-one-sided ontology of persistence and change. *Anil Mundra* is the inaugural Bhagvan Vimalnath Assistant Professor of Jain Studies and South Asian Religions in the Department of Religious Studies of the University of California, Santa Barbara, having recently completed an Alka Siddhartha Dalal Postdoctoral Fellowship for the study of Jainism at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. His research focuses on how premodern Jain philosophers negotiate religious identity, diversity, and disagreement. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Reminder for the below Call for Papers deadline is fast approaching! We are delighted to announce the dates and call for papers for the Spalding Symposium on Indian Religions 2025. We hope that many of you can join us at this special gathering to celebrate an incredible half century of scholarship, research, and community and to reflect together on the future. Please see the Call for Papers below and hold the dates. ???????- Spalding Symposium on Indian Religions, 2025 Christ Church, University of Oxford Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th May 2025 Call for Papers ? Proposal submission deadline: October 30th 2024 Theme: Festivals and Celebrations To celebrate its 50th anniversary as the foremost UK academic event on Indian religions, this year?s symposium invites papers that address the theme of festivals and celebrations. South Asian festivals play a pivotal role in the social and religious lives of millions. Festivals, broadly defined by Grimes as a ?ritual form of celebration? (1982), often take place within the public space, and they invoke ?alternative worlds that are connected with special expectations, special connections and special modes of consumption.? They occur ?in separate spheres in terms of time and space? (H?sken and Michaels, 2013), thus functioning as ?a liminal time set apart from the ordinary,? (Ilkama, 2023). It is in these spheres that text, ritual, material, performance and much more come together to form a ?festival? that is greater than a sum of its parts. This symposium invites papers that explore public, ritualised celebrations taking place in South Asia or having South Asian origins from a variety of disciplinary approaches and methods. Proposals are expected to address the theme of the conference. Our purview includes both religions of South Asian origin wherever in the world they are being practised, and those of non-South Asian origin present within South Asia. We welcome papers based upon all research methods, including anthropology, material culture, textual studies, religious studies, history, art history, heritage studies and performance studies. Keywords: Festivals, celebrations, utsava, y?tr?, mel?, jayant?, harvest, national/local, cultural heritage, ritual cycles, material culture, food, space, landscapes, globalism, digital festivals, diaspora, diversity, tribal and folk expressions, calendars Presenters are allocated forty minutes for their paper and twenty minutes for discussion. As the conference will be in person, a conference fee will apply. We also welcome proposals from advanced doctoral candidates, who will be allocated twenty minutes for their paper and ten minutes for discussion. Doctoral students may be entitled to bursaries if their papers are accepted. If you would like to give a presentation, please fill out this Google form (https://forms.gle/a4b21qhDRPhJX5Fp8) with a title, abstract (maximum 500 words), short bio and affiliation to the Spalding Symposium committee, by 30th October 2024. Due to the typical volume of submissions, individual feedback on proposals cannot be provided. Successful proposals will be announced in November 2024. Message-ID: Dear List members, For my own curiosity and that of a student: References can be found to the Qur'an having been translated into Sanskrit, but so far I found no bookshop or library having such translation nor did I find any scan of such translation online. A brief article that apparently appeared in 2010 in Milli Gazette is making echos on various media. "Razia Sultana of Deoband has translated the Qur'an into Sanskrit. It took her 12 years to complete the work because, according to her, finding the correct Sanskrit alternatives of Qur'anic words was a difficult task which took much of her time but which were essential to convey the proper meaning. Her work has been appreciated in foreign countries like America, Iran, Russia and some European countries from where she not only received laudatory and congratulatory letters but also received invitations to visit those countries." It is added that her grandfather translated the Qur'an into Hindi. Earlier translations into Sanskrit have been mentioned: - Qur'an Sharif - The Holy Koran, Cawnpore Razzaqi Press, 1897 (616 pages); - (Qur'an Sharif - The Holy Koran?) Mohammad Yusuf, Qadiyan and Amritsar, 1932 (724 pages); - translation by H Ganday Rao? - Rahul Sankrityayan (1893-1963) is said to have translated the Quran into Sanskrit while he was in jail for three years on account of anti-British political activities. The Journal of Hindu Studies welcomes open submission of articles and book reviews from scholars working on all areas of Hindu Studies. We also invite proposals for guest-edited themed issues. The Journal is running without any backlog and aims to have submissions reviewed within 8 weeks. Successful articles can potentially be published online in our advance articles section within 4-6 months of submission. In recognition of the centrality of translation to the field of Hindu Studies, as well as the dearth of established venues for publishing article-length translation pieces, the Journal is now also welcoming translation-based articles that feature translations of short texts, or sections of texts, in South Asian languages relevant to Hindu Studies. For more information on this new article type, see: https://academic.oup.com/jhs/pages/General_Instructions ('Translation Article Submissions'). The latest issue (17.2) of the Journal of Hindu Studies was recently published. Please find the table of contents below. The contents of the respective topics are briefly described in the table of contents on pp. 75ff. The editor does not say, at least not in his short English introduction (I can't read the Gujarati one), on which this division has been based. I assume the commentaries must have played a role in this. On the other hand, in several cases I do not find the division helpful. My question is if it was introduced by Jamb?vijay (loosely based on the commentaries) or is part of the textual tradition of the ?y?ra?gasutta.
