Dear Rich,

thank you very much for this tribute to Gérard Fussman, whose
erudition we all continue to prosper from in its published form.

I wonder periodically about the first coinage of this term.
Curiously, Fussman himself credited you with its invention, in a
somewhat cryptic statement on p. 130 of his review of our
reliquary book:

   C’était le cœur de ce que R. Salomon propose d’appeler le
   « Greater Gandhāra », expression que je n’utilise pas à cause
   des risques potentiels de confusions, que D. Jongeward
   n’utilise pas non plus, mais qui correspond à une réalité dont
   il ne tient pas compte.

And so, for now at least, the origin of the expression remains
lost in the mists of time.
