Assistant or Associate Professor in South Asian Religions



The Department of Religion at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, invites applications for a full-time assistant or associate professor in South Asian Religions to begin Fall 2022. The ideal candidate will specialize in premodern Hinduism and possess strong facility with Sanskrit texts. We seek a scholar deeply conversant with the field of Hindu studies in close conversation with the study of religion. Areas of particular interest include premodern Hindu narrative, philosophy, ritual, art, performance, and law. The successful candidate will have a proven record of research and teaching excellence and should be prepared to teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses in Hinduism and South Asian religions. We further desire a colleague who can contribute to interdisciplinary conversations and teaching in the Department of Religion and the Graduate Division of Religion, and who will inspire students to relate their study of premodern Hinduism to contemporary concerns.

The application must include: cover letter; curriculum vitae; two writing samples of up to 30 pages each; two sample undergraduate syllabi; and the names of at least three references. Applicants will also be required to complete a brief statement describing their experience and vision regarding the teaching and mentorship of students of diverse backgrounds. This statement must be submitted via a supplied form in the Interfolio application process. Candidates who advance to the first round of consideration will also be asked to ensure that referees upload letters of recommendation directly to Interfolio and may also be asked for further supporting documents.



The successful candidate must have a PhD in religion or a related field by the start of the position.
