I forgot to add the quote from Pradīpa cited by Abhyankar:
उद्देश्यप्रतिनिर्दिश्यमानयोरैक्यमापादयत् सर्वनाम पर्यायेण तत्तल्लिङ्गभाक्.
If anyone knows where it occurs in Pradīpa, I would be grateful.
