For an intersting and amusing observation on the psychology of pedagogy, see Śaṅkarācārya’s bhāṣya on Chāndogyopaniṣad 8.7.4 where he explains why Prajāpati permits his pupils, Indra and Virocana to temporarily entertain an inaccurate understanding of the ātman. It’s all about your students’ self esteem.

ātmany adhyāropitapāṇḍityamahattvaboddhṛtvau hi indravirocanau tathaiva ca prathitau loke. tau yadi prajāpatinā ‘mūḍhau! yuvāṃ viparītagrāhiṇāv’ ity uktau syātāṃ tatas tayoś citte duḥkhaṃ syāt. taj janitāc ca cittāvasādāt punaḥ praśnaśravaṇagrahaṇāvadhāraṇaṃ praty utsāhavighātaḥ syāt. ato ‘rakṣaṇīyau śiṣyāv’ iti manyate prajāpatiḥ. gṛhṇītāṃ tāvat. tad udaśarāvadṛṣṭāntenāpaneṣyāmi ca.

Cheers
