[INDOLOGY] dna and castes

My naive, honest, and sincere question: Who decided/declared that the brahmins are the “upper caste?” and what was/is the criterion for such designation?

As a brahmin myself, why am I not able to understand/accept such epithet?

Thanks and regards,
rajam
