Assuming, of course, that the term is Skt in origin but surely it was used
in Pali etc long before it was seemingly sanskritized.  A quick look in PED
suggests to me that a v.rddhi form of mahaa (maahaa) is not used.   Perhaps
a Pali scholar could elucidate.
