The south Indian usage also gracefully avoids the Pandit vs. Ustad 
designations of North Indian music. Sheikh Chinna Moulana and Rajaratnam
Pillai are both called vidvans. The word Pandit is generally reserved in
south Indian usage for Sanskrit scholars and such.
