From haccme at EDU.WASHINGTON.U Wed Feb 5 01:44:42 1992 From: haccme at EDU.WASHINGTON.U (Thomas Ridgeway) Date: Tue, 04 Feb 92 17:44:42 -0800 Subject: TeluguTeX package available for ftp Message-ID: <161227015228.23782.14356511989983019955.generated@prod2.harmonylists.io> I am pleased to inform you of a newly available system for typesetting Telugu text with TeX. The software is available now in the ftp directory pub/tex/telugu of the host blackbox.hacc.washington.edu [128.95.200.1] Reproduced below is a portion of the readme file in the package: ++++ begin excerpted text TeluguTeX --------- TeluguTeX enables you to typeset Telugu text using TeX/LaTex family of software. This package mainly contains two sets of programs. One set is used to create symbols used in composing Telugu text. These programs are written in METAFONT. The other set of programs use these symbols as componants to assemble Telugu text. These programs are written in TeX (macros). Once you have generated the fonts for the sizes and styles that you need you do not have to worry about the METAFONT programs( unless the output device changes). But you will always need the TeX programs to typeset Telugu text. . . . It is assumed that you are installing TeluguTeX under UNIX(tm). METAFONT and TeX programs in this package are not dependent on UNIX, but make and awk programs are needed. If you do not have these programs then you will have to do some work.... . . . A note from the authors: we hope you will find this package useful for typesetting Telugu. TeluguTeX was developed by us when we were at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA. Please direct your criticism/comments about TeluguTeX to email: lzk60 at css.amdahl.com snailmail: 915 Almaden Avenue Sunnyvale, CA 94086 USA Amount of time we can spend on TeluguTeX is fairly limited, so please do not expect a prompt response. If you have questions about METAFONT, TeX, LaTeX, drivers etc. you should turn elsewhere. We assume that you know how to generate fonts using METAFONT, how to use TeX/LaTeX and how to produce output on whatever device you may have. Happy TeluguTeXing, Lakshmankumar Mukkavilli Lakshmi Mukkavilli +++ end excerpted material TeluguTeX is free, copyrighted, software. It is available under the terms of the FSF General Public License. For the benefit of those unable to run Unix make and awk, some (possibly all) of the necessary files which a unix make session generates are included in the subdirectories texfiles and mffiles. If someone wished to bring the system up on a non-Unix system these files might be useful. The software provided for handling the conversion of the supported transliteration system is written in TeX, and it will *not* run on a puny TeX. If you wish to do Telugu on a small system, you will probably need to write a preprocessor, possibly using the TeX code as a guide. Other examples might be the preprocessors in use for the various Tamil and Devanagari systems. Interested parties would do well to pick up the software relatively soon. Blackbox will not maintain its availability for ftp an indefinitely long period. If you are interested in TeluguTeX but do not have previous experience in TeX or METAFONT, please obtain help and advice from gurus in *your* institution. To ask developers of such packages to provide novice-user help only detracts from their ability to make the world a friendlier place for Indic computing. cheers, Tom - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thomas Ridgeway, Director, Humanities and Arts Computing Center/NorthWest Computing Support Center 35 Thomson Hall, University of Washington, DR-10 Seattle, WA 98195 phone: (206)-543-4218 * Ask me about * Internet: ridgeway at blackbox.hacc.washington.edu * UnixTeX * - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From akella at BE.AC.ULG.MONTEFIORE Tue Feb 4 16:50:00 1992 From: akella at BE.AC.ULG.MONTEFIORE (AKELLA VIJAY BHASKAR R14 PAVELLA) Date: Tue, 04 Feb 92 17:50:00 +0100 Subject: E-mail to India !! Message-ID: <161227015224.23782.6345335244490635304.generated@prod2.harmonylists.io> Hi ! Here is some info I have about e-mail to India. * The e-mail gateway to India is via Bombay. * It is possible to find out places which have e-mail facility using the whois command. This allows one to search the database which has , or rather ,supposed to have addr of all institutes with e-mail facility in India. I am including the help info on this facility and also a sample session. (which is mainly aimed at pointing out the fact that not all addr are in the DB). Hope this helps. Vijay Akella ============================================================================= Online Email directory of ERNET users in India (maintained on sangam) The whois program examines a central database of registered users and, based on a user supplied search key, looks up and displays information about all selected users. Display is always truncated to fifty lines. The command whois -h sangam.ernet.in help gets you a copy of this document. SEARCH KEYS All searches are case-insensitive. When searching the database with a name key, you can use a few characters of the name instead of the entire word. This is handy if you are not sure of the exact spelling. A search key consists of a single word or group of words contained in (double) quotes (" ... "). The single word form matches city name. whois -h sangam.ernet.in bombay (Lists ernet sites in Bombay) whois -h sangam.ernet.in mad (All the Madras sites !) Queries using the form key at site will match user's login name or full name as in /etc/passwd file. whois -h sangam.ernet.in joshi at shakti (All users on shakti matching the pattern 'joshi') The use of the symbol % in front of a name limits the search to the field containing the login name. Eg: whois -h sangam.ernet.in %sadanand at shakti (only logins starting with 'sadanand' at shakti) This will fail to match P Sadanandan, whose login name is ps Directory outputs associate a mailid with each user, for further enquiry, to retrieve full postal address, phone and Fax numbers. For example, sh287 is the mailid of PKX Thomas as shown below. (sh287) thomas:(Mr. P.K.X. So, here is a reply that may be useful to a number of you. 1) The link from India to uunet is thru a leased line running 9600 BPS. It is a TCP/IP link. We run uucp over it. You can currently use the finger command to get information about ac- counts on shakti. You can also "talk" to people here. As leased lines get installed you will be able to reach other nodes also this way. 2) Email can be sent to over 50 locations in India now. A list is available as a separate document on soochak.ncst.ernet.in as file pub/ernet/sites 3) We can post news and read news from Bombay. News is not avail- able at other sites as of now. 4) Leased lines to Bangalore and Madras became operational in Nov 91. A leased line to Delhi is already in operation. It runs at 4800 BPS. 5) A major improvement that is expected to occur soon is the in- stallation of eight Sun workstations at eight ERNET sites. Some of them will work as communication computers. We expect them to add new facilities at these sites: TCP/IP links, domain addressing, whois facility and news, in addition to Email. 6) A whois facility covering over 30 nodes on ernet is available on sangam. Use the command whois -h sangam.ernet.in help to get the help file. *** From ramani at IN.ERNET.NCST.SAATHI Tue Feb 4 18:45:16 1992 From: ramani at IN.ERNET.NCST.SAATHI (ramani at IN.ERNET.NCST.SAATHI) Date: Wed, 05 Feb 92 00:15:16 +0530 Subject: E-mail to India Message-ID: <161227015230.23782.1838125074164830114.generated@prod2.harmonylists.io> I am mailing this to your list (Indology) at the request of Mr Akella Vijay Bhaskar Pavella. The entire Pali canon, Thai version, has been available for a number of years from Mahidol University, for app. $4,000 US. Recently the PTS canon has been input with a combination of Dhammakaya Foundation and UC-Berkeley, and mostly awaits various massaging, and no doubt intense copyright, distribution, etc. discussions. Many individuals have input texts as well (I used to have a number of Dhammapada on disk). Perhaps those who have input texts could let us all know? The following is a posting which appeared in the Indian News Network Digest about e-mail connections to India. Its a bit long & sorry if it is not of interest to u. Vijay Akella -----------------------Message follows--------------------------------------- Date: 15 Feb 92 19:22:46 GMT From: bharathi at acsu.buffalo.edu (Chandra Shekara Bharathi) Subject: Indian Email Addresses ( Repost ) I have had some requests to post the Indian Email addresses file.. along with a few requests for info regarding the data base at sangam. The info has been incorporated into the FAQ maintained by Vikas Deolaliker. The file follows.. However it must be mentioned that some of the node names are changing. The postmasters however have mailiases so that mail addressed to these old addresses do get to the users. Iam trying to compile a new list. Once that is done, I'll post it ON THE NET. The database at sangam is being updated constantly and is by no means complete. So, if you know a friend of yours that has email facilities, but his/her name does not appear in the database, ur best bet is to write to the postmaster of that particular site ( not NCST @ Bombay ). ----- Subsequent to my earlier posting on SCI, I have received > 3 dozen or so requests for clarification and repost of the info regarding this subject. Also, I have had questions like: -> why cannot I finger delhi even though I can access the data base. -> node shiva.ernet.in does not show why? So, here is a repost with some info about the "FINGER" As regards, why shiva.ernet.in does not show, it is 'cos NCST guys haven't yet rcvd. info from that node. First of all, it is *NOT* like the finger of UNIX systems. It is just a database maintained at NCST - a database that has enough info. For more info and help regarding email addresses in India, whois -h sangam.ernet.in help For a list of all the nodes in India, whois -h sangam.ernet.in "" -the double quotes are necessary This w'd give info regarding the nodes presently represented in the data base maintained by the NCST people at Bombay. For a list of the nodes present in a given city, whois -h sangam.ernet.in city_name where city_name can be part/whole of the city u wish to send mail to. for eg. for a list of all node names in bangalore, try whois -h sangam.ernet.in bang Once the exact node name is known, to obtain the login name of the person u wish to contact, whois -h sangam.ernet.in name_of_the_person at node_name where name_of_the_person can be part/whole of the person's last/first or middle name [ Nick names not allowed :-) ] All searches are case-insensitive, so u need not worry about it. ps: The NCST people are maintaining this database as a service to the public. So, it is not a very good idea to flood the postmaster's mailbox with requests regarding the database and with requests for forwarding the mail. For u to get info on userids for nodes not represented on the database, pl send mail to postmaster at the_node_u_want_to_send_mail.ernet.in Hope this helps.
